A 16mm colour contact printer workshop at WPC  by Richard Tuohy and Dianna Barrie

“A 16mm contact printer is a great thing to have. It’s a very powerful piece of film-making equipment and is an essential part of the apparatus of cinema. And Sydney’s new Workshop for Potential Cinema has one! Traditionally, the contact printer was designed to do one thing: make near perfect duplicates relatively quickly. If you have access to one, however, there is much more that can be done with these machines than just simple duplication. It’s possible to use them for compositing images and other improvisatory image manipulations. In this workshop we will explore the basic operation of the contact printer in colour printing onto Kodak 3383 16mm colour print stock… And then we will get into some of the serious game playing that’s possible with a simple colour contact printer”.
